The Tarmac Was Theirs

waterloowellingtonflightcentre.com
When registration opened for this year's Girls Can Fly event, 275 flight spots disappeared in under sixty seconds. That number told you everything you needed to know about how Saturday was going to go.
Families flocked to the Region of Waterloo International Airport on Saturday for the annual event that Waterloo Wellington Flight Centre has been running since the mid-2010s. Girls aged 8 to 18, each of them already registered before the day began, got into Cessna 172s, Pipers, and Diamond aircraft with volunteer pilots and went up. Parents stayed on the ground. The flights are reserved exclusively for the girls so that as many as possible get the experience.
The flights were only part of it. Porter Airlines and Jazz Aviation attended with all-female crews. The Waterloo Warbirds brought aircraft. SkyCare Air Ambulance was there. Great Lakes Helicopter ran rides throughout the day. And for the first time, attendees could get close to the Pipistrel Velis Electro, one of Canada's first all-electric aircraft. Lost Aviator Coffee brought a biplane and, presumably, coffee.
Last year 4,500 people came out. This year the tarmac was full again.
I keep thinking about what it costs to put on a day like this. The volunteer pilots, the industry partners, the exhibitors, all of it free to anyone who shows up. The whole logic of the event is that the barrier to aviation for most girls isn't aptitude. It's never having had a reason to think the cockpit was for them. One afternoon at the airport, at eight years old, can be that reason. Girls Can Fly has grown into one of Ontario's largest aviation outreach events. It started small, at one flight centre, in Breslau. That's still where it happens.
If you have a daughter between 8 and 18 and want her on a plane next year, the one thing to know is this: flight registration opens in April, and this year it went live on April 28 at 10am. In 2025 the spots were gone in two minutes. This year, under one minute. Set a reminder now and watch wwfc.ca/girlscanfly when April comes around. The event itself is always free and open to everyone.
