One Night Wasn't Enough

In 1975, someone at K-W Oktoberfest decided to do something simple: start naming the women doing extraordinary things in this region. One night a year. An awards ceremony. Over the next fifty years it grew into twelve categories, everything from arts and culture to skilled trades to STEM to young adults to a lifetime achievement award for the women who'd been at it the longest. Fifty-one ceremonies now. Hundreds of names on the record.

For most of those years, that one night was the whole thing. You got recognized, you got applauded, and then the room went home.

Last year someone asked what would happen if the room didn't go home quite so fast.

The Waterloo Region Women's Expo launched in 2025 as the answer. A full day, not an evening. Eighty exhibitors rather than a stage. The same instinct as the original awards, which is that the women doing the work in this region deserve more than a mention, but with room to actually buy from their businesses, sit in their workshops, hear them talk, and leave with something useful.

The awards ceremony always felt slightly walled off to me. The kind of event you hear about after the fact unless you already knew to get tickets. The expo is a different proposition. It's a room anyone can walk into.

This Saturday is the second one. Five mainstage sessions including a keynote speaker. Six culinary vendors running all afternoon. The first 150 through the door get a gift bag worth over $100, Conestoga Mall gift card inside. There's a passport program with a curated basket worth $500 at the end of the day, too.

Saturday, May 23. Marshall Hall at Bingemans, 11am to 5pm. Tickets are $15, or two for $20 with the code EXPO2420 at womenoftheyear.ca.
