Six Years…Same Idea

If you've been around downtown Kitchener for a while, you probably remember Queen Street Commons. The Working Centre's café at 43 Queen Street South has been feeding people since 2006 with vegetarian meals made from scratch, priced low enough that nobody has to think twice before walking in, run mostly by the 400 or so volunteers.

But in 2020 because of the pandemic, Commons closed, because The Working Centre looked around at what the city needed and redirected, Shelter & Housing. People sleeping rough. The café could wait. So it did, for six years, while the staff renovated it themselves in the time they could find between everything else, which is partially why it took as long as it did, and which tells you something about how this organization operates.

Some of the most important work in this city happens without anyone making a fuss about it. No press release, no ribbon cutting. The Working Centre has shared 156,000 meals, housed people through 54,600 nights, and kept a quiet, determined presence on Queen Street through a pandemic, a renovation, and every shift this downtown has been through and most of us drove past it on the way to somewhere else.

That's not a criticism of anyone. It's just how it goes. The people doing the most tend to be too busy doing it to stop and tell you about it.

The Commons reopened last week with same prices, same spirit. Joe Mancini, the director, calls it a beautiful gathering space where a group can come for free and do the work of community. The neighbourhood around it has changed considerably but…The Working Centre just kept building through all of it.

Next time you're downtown and wondering where to go, 43 Queen Street South is your answer.
